Science: Rosemary Extracts for Skin health

I have a soft spot for whole-plant research.

Herbalists have long argued that when we pull a plant apart looking for the one compound responsible for an effect, we may learn something important while also losing something important. Plants are chemically complicated things, and their constituents may be doing more than one job at a time.

That does not mean isolated compounds are useless. Quite the opposite. They help researchers figure out how a plant may be working. But there is a difference between asking which molecule causes this effect? and asking what is this plant, with all of its chemistry intact, doing to the system?

Rosemary extracts is a particularly interesting place to ask that question.

Rosemary Extract Is Not Rosemary Essential Oil

Essential oil is usually produced through steam distillation, which captures many of the plant’s volatile aromatic compounds. A water or alcohol extract is chemically different. Depending on the extraction method, it can contain compounds such as rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, carnosol, flavonoids, and other polyphenols that are central to much of the skin research.

So if a study uses an alcohol extract of rosemary leaves, we cannot assume the same result applies to rosemary essential oil. “Rosemary” might mean a tea, tincture, infused oil, standardized extract, essential oil, or even a single compound isolated from the plant. Those are not the same preparation, and science is increasingly showing us that the difference matters.

What Rosemary Seems to Be Doing in Skin

Some of the strongest evidence around rosemary and skin centers on oxidative stress and inflammation.

Skin is constantly dealing with sunlight, pollution, inflammation, and the normal wear and tear of cellular activity. When oxidative stress gets out of balance, it can contribute to damage in the skin and the breakdown of collagen. Rosemary contains several compounds that may help protect against this kind of damage.

Recent laboratory research has looked at water-based rosemary extract in human skin cells that produce collagen and connective tissue. The findings suggest rosemary extract can influence oxidative stress, collagen production, and skin aging. That is not the same thing as proving that rosemary works like retinol on someone’s face. Rosemary extract has also shown anti-inflammatory activity. A 2013 study looking at inflammation caused by Cutibacterium acnes, one of the bacteria associated with acne, found that rosemary extract reduced several of the chemical signals the body uses to create inflammation. Researchers also saw anti-inflammatory effects in an animal study. (PubMed)

That does not prove rosemary treats acne in humans. What it does show is that rosemary appears to affect some of the inflammation involved in the process. Even more interestingly, different compounds in rosemary affected different parts of that inflammatory response.

That is where the whole-plant question starts getting interesting.

The Really Interesting Part: Wound Regeneration

In 2025, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania looked at whether rosemary could influence wound healing. They did not start with rosemary essential oil. They took rosemary leaves, chopped them up, extracted them with alcohol, dried the resulting extract, and mixed it into a cream. In other words, a Rosemary Extract for Skin Health.

Then they tested that preparation on wounds in mice.

The rosemary-treated wounds did more than simply close. Researchers saw more rebuilding of the structures normally found in healthy skin, including hair follicles, oil glands, and the layer of fat beneath the skin, along with less of the thick, fibrous tissue associated with scarring. That matters because ordinary adult wound healing is mostly about repair. The body closes the damage and fills the area with scar tissue. Regeneration goes further by rebuilding more of what was actually there before, and rosemary appeared to push healing more in that direction.

The researchers then started pulling the plant apart to figure out why. One compound, carnosic acid, turned out to be especially important. It activated a sensor found on nerves in the skin. Those nerves do more than let us feel heat, pain, or irritation; they also communicate with the immune system and can influence how tissue heals.

When researchers blocked that pathway, rosemary no longer produced the same healing effect. (JCI Insight)

This is the kind of science I love. The whole plant showed an effect, researchers found one of the compounds helping to create it, and then they figured out at least part of how it was working.

We do not have to choose between whole-plant herbalism and studying individual plant compounds. One can show us the effect. The other can help explain it.

There is one very important limit here: this work was done in mice. It does not prove that rosemary prevents scars or regenerates damaged skin in humans. That is still a question for future research.

What Whole-Plant Research Adds

Science likes to find an active ingredient. Find the molecule, figure out what it does, and determine how much is needed. That is incredibly useful, but plants do not arrive as isolated molecules.

Rosemary contains rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, carnosol, flavonoids, aromatic compounds, and many other substances. Some may affect inflammation. Some may help protect cells from damage. Others may change how compounds are absorbed or used by the body. They are not necessarily all doing the same job.

Herbalists often describe this as synergy: the possibility that several parts of a plant may work together and change the overall effect. Sometimes that happens. One compound really does seem to be responsible for most of an effect. Sometimes several compounds are simply doing different useful things at the same time, and sometimes one may even get in the way of another.

So I do not think we can simply say, “The whole plant is always better.” But I do think herbalists have good reason to be cautious when one exciting compound is discovered and everything else in the plant is treated as unimportant. Once we pull that compound out by itself, we have changed the thing we are studying.

Rosemary is a good example. Researchers are already finding different compounds affecting different parts of inflammation, cell protection, and healing. The plant may not be doing one thing particularly well. It may be doing several small things at the same time.

There Really Isn’t One Thing Called “Rosemary Extract”

This is easy to miss, and it matters.

Water, alcohol, and oil each pull different collections of compounds from rosemary. Steam distillation produces rosemary essential oil, which is made mostly of the plant’s volatile aromatic compounds. Researchers can go even further and isolate just one substance, such as carnosic acid, and study it by itself.

All of those things started as rosemary, but by the time they reach your cup, tincture bottle, skincare product, or laboratory dish, they can be chemically very different.

So whenever we read that “rosemary did X,” there is another question worth asking:

What kind of rosemary?

That is not nitpicking. The way rosemary is prepared may determine whether the compounds responsible for an effect are even present. Herbalists have always cared about preparation, and science is giving us increasingly good reasons why we should.

What Do We Know in Humans?

This is where the research gets thinner, but there is some human evidence.

Several studies have tested supplements containing rosemary extract combined with grapefruit or other citrus extracts. People taking these combinations showed less skin redness after UV exposure and some improvements in things associated with sun-related skin aging, such as elasticity and wrinkle depth. More recent research has continued looking at rosemary-and-grapefruit combinations for protecting skin from UV damage. (PubMed)

There is also a 2025 study in which women took either a supplement containing rosemary extract and other ingredients or a placebo for 12 weeks. The group taking the supplement showed improvements in several measures of facial skin quality, including roughness, dullness, and redness. (PubMed)

Those results are encouraging, but the preparations were specific formulas containing more than rosemary. We cannot give rosemary all the credit, and we cannot assume rosemary tea, tincture, infused oil, or face cream would produce the same results.

None of this makes rosemary a replacement for sunscreen, medical wound care, or acne treatment.

So What Does the Science Actually Tell Us?

Rosemary is not a proven miracle skincare plant. It is something more interesting than that.

Different rosemary extracts and compounds appear to affect inflammation, the way skin responds to damage, collagen production, UV-related stress, and even some of the processes involved in rebuilding injured skin. Some of those findings come from human studies, while a lot still comes from cells and animals.

Most interestingly, the research is showing us that different parts of rosemary may be doing different things. Pulling the plant apart can teach us an enormous amount about how it works, but sometimes what we learn is that there was never just one thing doing the work.

Rosemary may be one of those plants: a whole little community of chemistry interacting with a whole little community of biology. And we are still figuring out the conversation.
