Native Range & Cultivation: Stinging nettle is native across much of Europe, temperate Asia, western North Africa, and parts of North America, and is now widespread throughout temperate regions. It favors moist, nitrogen-rich soil and often appears along streams, forest edges, roadsides, fields, and disturbed ground. Nettle is a hardy perennial that spreads readily by rhizomes as well as seed. Its leaves and stems are covered with tiny stinging hairs that make fresh plants memorable to anyone who handles them carelessly.

Contraindications: Nettle leaf is generally considered safe when eaten as food or used in traditional herbal amounts. Fresh, uncooked nettles sting the skin and mouth and should be cooked, dried, crushed, or otherwise processed before eating. Because nettle can increase urine production, therapeutic use may not be appropriate when fluid intake is restricted or when swelling is related to serious heart or kidney disease. Extra caution is reasonable when using concentrated preparations alongside medications that affect blood pressure, blood sugar, or fluid balance.
Parts Used: Primarily the leaves and young aerial parts; roots and seeds are also used in herbalism but have different traditional uses and should be considered separately.
Preparation & Forms: Young nettle leaves can be cooked much like spinach and added to soups, stews, sauces, pestos, and other dishes. Dried leaves are commonly prepared as tea or a stronger herbal infusion and may also be used in tinctures or powders. Cooking and drying disable the sting, making the leaves safe to handle and eat. Nettle root is generally prepared separately as an extract or tincture rather than used as a substitute for the leaf.

Folk Use & Lore: Nettle has occupied the wonderfully complicated position of being food, medicine, nuisance, fiber plant, and magical herb all at once. Across European traditions, it became associated with strength, protection, endurance, and the ability to drive away harmful influences. It appears in the Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm and in later folk traditions as a plant of protection and restoration. Its sting also shaped its symbolism. Nettle does not defend itself quietly, making it an especially fitting plant for stories about resilience, boundaries, and breaking enchantments.
Energetics: Traditionally considered drying, stimulating, and nourishing. Nettle is often described as building and restorative while also encouraging movement through the urinary system. Its character is less soothing than strengthening: a green, mineral-rich plant traditionally used when the body needs nourishment without heaviness.
Current Research: Modern research supports nettle’s reputation as a nutrient-dense food plant and has identified minerals, carotenoids, polyphenols, and other antioxidant compounds in the leaves. Laboratory and animal studies have also found anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and metabolic effects. Human research on nettle leaf remains limited and varies widely by preparation. European herbal authorities recognize traditional use of nettle herb for increasing urine production as part of the management of minor urinary complaints. Nettle root has been studied separately for urinary symptoms associated with benign prostate enlargement, but those findings should not be applied to nettle leaf.
